Quick Installation Guide For
New AP/CAR
Windows
Overview: By using this guide, most users will be able to quickly
install AP/CAR for Windows via the Web. A separate troubleshooting guide
is also available to assist with any problems.
Requirements: AP/CAR for Windows requires 50mb free disk space, 64 Mb of RAM, a
SVGA monitor capable of doing 800x600 and a Pentium 120 mhz or greater processor
to install. Either Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 95 or Windows 98 can
be used. A working copy of your Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer must be
installed to access the internet.
AP/CAR for Windows will install itself gracefully on most users'
machines. Installation is a two step process consisting of downloading the
installation program using your Internet browser, and then executing the
downloaded program.
Notes: Please quit all other applications
before installing AP/CAR.
Please run the "Get CARProd Image" after completing the installation to bring
AP/CAR up to date. When the image is finished downloading, you
can run the "CARProd".Installation
Instructions:
Use your Internet browser
to go to the AP/CAR Distribution Page. The URL address for the
page is currently http://www.ais.columbia.edu/car. Please enter this address directly in the location
area at the top of your Internet browser screen.

ATTENTION: Before
proceeding to install the New CAR application, please identify the old CAR
icons on your PC Desktop matching the ones shown below and delete them from
your desktop. To delete an icon, right click on it and select delete; then
answer 'yes' when asked if you want to do the deletion.

Click on the Download AP/CAR Installation
Package.
Click on the Download AP/CAR for Windows (Production) link
on the page depending on your operating system . This will start the
download of the AP/CAR Installation program.
When the download
starts, you may be asked how to handle the file. Select 'Save' so that the
file will be saved to disk. If the Internet browser is already configured to load .EXE
files then it will perform this step automatically.

A Save File
dialog box will appear so that you can tell your Internet Browser where to store the
installation file. You should store the file in the C:\ directory. Write
down the location where you store it, because you will need to find it
again.
Your Internet browser will download the installation program to your
hard drive (C:\). A message box will appear on the screen showing the
progress of the download. The installation program is several megabytes
long, and can take from a few seconds (on a fast connection with little
traffic), to several minutes (on a slow or modem connection or if there is
much traffic).

When
your Internet browser has finished downloading the program, the download message box will
disappear.
Quit your Internet browser and all other open
applications.
Run the download (CARWIN9X.EXE, CARNT2K.EXE) using the Run command on the Start Menu (in Windows '95 or
NT).

AP/CAR will install automatically. Please note any
warnings or errors which appear.
When the installation is
finished, the system will reboot.
After Installation and Rebooting:
Two Icons for AP/CAR for Windows
95/NT will be installed.

Users should use the icons in that AP/CAR group to run the
program.
Click on "Get CARProd Image" first to download the most recent image. After
the download is complete use the "CARProd" Icon to
start AP/CAR for Windows. After the first time, you only need
to run "Get CARProd
Image" when prompted by the main program.
